This project marks our third Eberson atmospheric theater which is a deeply meaningful milestone for our studio
We are proud to share that Wilson Butler Architects has been selected to help bring the historic State Theatre in Kalamazoo Michigan back to life.
Designed in 1927 by legendary theater architect John Eberson, The State Theatre is one of only a small number of remaining atmospheric theaters in the United States. For nearly a century it has transported audiences into another world beneath a star-filled sky while serving as a cultural anchor for downtown Kalamazoo and the broader Midwest.
This project marks our third Eberson atmospheric theater which is a deeply meaningful milestone for our studio. These theaters represent some of the most imaginative and technically ambitious performance spaces ever built blending architecture storytelling and illusion into a single unforgettable experience.
The State Theatre has entered a new chapter under the stewardship of Lead Balloon Productions whose vision is rooted in preservation accessibility and long-term sustainability. Our role is to honor the theater’s extraordinary architectural legacy while carefully upgrading the building to support contemporary performance, improve the patron experience, and ensure the venue remains welcoming and accessible to all.
As with all our historic theater work our approach balances respect for original design intent with thoughtful future focused interventions that enhance functionality, safety, and comfort without compromising the magic that makes this place so special. The goal is not simply restoration but renewal ensuring the State Theatre continues to serve as a vibrant cultural hub for generations to come.
As the theater approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, we are honored to be part of its next act and to continue our long-standing commitment to preserving America’s most iconic performance spaces.
